Still classy…

The Roman Catholic bishop whose diocese includes the University of Notre Dame says he will boycott President Barack Obama’s commencement speech at the Catholic school because Obama’s policies on stem cell research and abortion run counter to church teaching.

Bishop John D’Arcy of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend said in a statement Tuesday that Obama’s recent decision to federally fund embryonic stem cell research “has now placed in public policy … his long-stated unwillingness to hold human life sacred.”

“While claiming to separate politics from science, he has in fact separated science from ethics and has brought the American government, for the first time in history, into supporting direct destruction of innocent human life,” D’Arcy said.

Obama has said the decision was aimed at easing human suffering.

The commencement speech the year before I went to Holy Cross was delivered by alumnus Chris Matthews, and there was a handful of people grumbling about protesting because he’s openly pro-choice. The year I graduated, our speaker was Chief Justice Roberts, and, since this was shortly after the ruling on partial-birth abortion, there was a handful of people grumbling about protesting the Court’s decision.

Both groups of people are idiots. The stance on abortion, one way or the other, has absolutely nothing to do with delivering a commencement speech. These people were chosen because they are a reasonably famous alum, a Supreme Court Justice, and in the case of Notre Dame, the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Just accept the honor and stop trying to be some damn divisive all the time.

I think we’re a little past the point where the Catholic Church can go toe to toe with a powerful state it disagrees with.

Makes you wonder what his stance on the Manhattan Project is. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed under orders of the U.S. government. What about biological warfare research? And chemical warfare. And conventional warfare, for that matter.
