Happy President’s Day!

Submitted without comment:

President Barack Obama’s picture was removed this week from a Presidents Day sign at the Peterson Air Force Base commissary after customers complained that the image did not fit the holiday commemorating the birthdays of past presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

My biggest problem with the way that this story is written is that it does insinuate that there was a sinister motive in removing Obama’s picture. The structure of the story, and the inclusion of an unnamed source next to a speaker for the NAACP are examples of how this type of story is usually handled by local media. It lends much more credence to the NAACP’s argument, but in a sneaky kind of way.
Not that I believe for a second that this could not have happened — the story itself reflects a bias I tend to share — but it’s kind of sloppy reporting. It plays to stereotypes of the crotchety, retired, bespectacled, white WWII vet who can’t cotton to the country’s new-fangled, liberal ways. “A black president!?!?”
Hey, black men in authority have worked fine before. Need I bring up Blazing Saddles?
But I digress. I’m sure this story does highlight an actual bigotry underlying Colorado Springs’ retired military personnel, but it could have been better written. As it stands, it shoots its own credibility in the foot, and seems kind of like exploitative, yellow journalism.
